Moving Into Your First House Checklist

Moving Into Your First House Checklist

Purchasing your first home is an exciting and nerve-wracking time. There’s endless paperwork, inspections, walkthroughs, and tons of back and forth. Once all of the legal and technical stuff is taken care of you may feel a sense of relief—but the work isn’t quite done yet. Now, you have to move in! Be sure to follow this moving into your first house checklist so you have all the essentials you need.

Living Spaces

In living spaces there are a few essentials to remember. Whether its furniture buying considerations or thoughts on how to set up the space that’s stressing you out, as long as you have these essentials, your home will be complete.

  • Seating options (couch, chairs, ottomans, seating cushion, etc.)

  • Tables (side tables, eating tables, coffee tables, and more!)

  • Coasters (your tables will thank us.)

  • Storage solutions (you’ll have lots of stuff you need to store, trust us.)

  • Throw pillows and blankets (and other cozy essentials.)

  • Plants (these add life and clean your air. It’s a win-win!)

Kitchen

Kitchens need so many things. Other than essential cooking items, invest in these thoughtful necessities for your kitchen.

  • A dish drying rack to dry your dishes.

  • Coordinating dish towels to make it look like an intentional design choice.

  • A spoon rest to save your countertops from messes.

  • A sponge rack for inside your sink so you have somewhere to set your sponge.

  • A stovetop cover (this increases your counterspace when your stove isn’t in use.)

Bedrooms

In bedrooms, the necessities (other than a bed) differ based on the person’s individual preference. Below are some must-have items for any bedroom.

  • Extra pillows are perfect to have on hand if you need extra support, have guests, or just want a pretty bed.

  • A seating option for getting dressed, folding things, or just taking a load off at the end of a day.

  • A bedside table to hold glasses, books, phone chargers, etc.

  • A pillow mist (trust us, a soothing scent at the end of a long day will put you right to sleep.)

Bathrooms

It’s easy to think all your bathroom really needs is a functioning toilet, shower, and sink—but there’s much more that goes into a comfortable and luxurious bathroom experience than one may think.

  • Hand towels (guests can avoid the horror of drying their clean hands on your body towel.)

  • Extra soap (just in case.)

  • Extra toilet paper holder (again, just in case.)

  • Toilet plunger (it’s better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it!)

Incidentals

There are more things to consider when moving into a home that you own than when you move into a rental space. Everything in the home are items you now own and are responsible for. Ensure you have these essentials:

  • Extra air filters (you’ll need to replace these monthly.)

  • Plumber’s tape to fix minor leaks.

  • Electrical tape for all your minor electrical needs.

  • The contact information of a repair man you trust (a good handyman is absolutely essential for homeowners everywhere.)
